- Chelsea suffered a 1 - 0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City to put their hope of a top 4 in serious danger
- Pundits Jamie Redknapp and Gary Neville criticized Conte's tactics after the game
- An angry Conte branded them 'stupid' for their harsh criticism
Chelsea gaffer, Antonio Conte, has come all out in attacking pundits Jamie Redknapp and Gary Neville labelling them “stupid” after they condemned his side performance against Manchester City.
Redknapp claimed the Blues approach was “anti-football” and a “crime against football” on Sky Sports while his colleague Neville said Conte’s players were “woeful” and “embarrassing” after accusing them of “just watching Man City play – like mannequins”.
Despite the criticism, an adamant Conte insisted that it would be reckless to play openly against a side like City and cited Arsenal’s back-to-back 3-0 hammerings to the runaway Premier League leaders only days before as examples of why he approached the game cautiously.
Speaking about his side defeat to Manchester City, Conte said: “I think in this moment you have to accept every criticism but I am not so stupid to play against Manchester City open and to lose 3-0 or 4-0.
“If I remember well, a few days ago, Arsenal played twice against them and then you criticise a lot [Arsene] Wenger because they conceded three goals in only 30 minutes.

He added: “I think the pundit has to use their heads to understand when you speak about tactics because I think you must have knowledge to speak about tactics and not only to speak in a stupid way.”
The defeat was Chelsea’s fourth in their past five league outings, but while Conte said his side had reason for regret in the losses to Bournemouth, Watford and Manchester United, he said City were simply “unstoppable”.
The reigning champions, who have won just twice since the turn of the year in the league, now trail Pep Guardiola’s team by 25 points.
The former Italy manager continued: “I think that we must have a big regret for the defeat against Bournemouth, against Watford and against United but I don’t think today because I think we played against a team that has shown to be a strong team.
“I think they showed the difference between them and us in this moment - 25 points is a big gap and I think that we can have regret for the other games but not for this because I think the effort of the players was an important effort.
"When you play against Manchester City, this kind of team, they are showing fantastic quality but at the same time a fantastic mentality. When you match quality and mentality you become unstoppable.”
Conte said his players had followed his instructions and that he tried to change things but that Bernardo Silva’s goal 35 seconds into the second half left them facing a huge task.
He said: “We prepared the game in this way - don’t concede space between the lines.
"When you play against City you have to use your brain, otherwise you risk to finish the game in a bad way and to lose 3-0 or 4-0. I think we tried to not concede the space for a long part of the match and that was good. For sure to concede the goal after 30 seconds of the second half was a pity because then it was very difficult for us to come back.”
City need four more wins to guarantee the title and Guardiola has told his players to complete that task before turning their attention to becoming the first Premier League side to try to surpass the 100 point barrier. Chelsea hold the record of 95 points in 2004/05.

City manager Pep Guardiola who wore a Marie Curie daffodil instead of his usual yellow ribbon in support of imprisoned Catalan politicians while speaking about his side impressive performance said: “What really matters is to be champion, that is what matters.
“I never spoke to the players about the records – ‘We have to win these next two games to achieve something’. No. I assure you it’s about the next one – Basel. We’re going to try to play the way we did today then Stoke City we’re going to play like we did all season and after we will see."
