In 2017, President Nkurunziza and his government were implicated in a United Nations report that said there was strong evidence crimes against humanity had been committed in Burundi.
The report said that not only government forces committed crimes but opposition groups were also involved after violence erupted in 2015.
The turmoil sparked after president Nkurunziza declared for a third term in office, and was later re-elected in a poll that was boycotted by the opposition.
