- Northern Christians has called for the immediate release of Leah Sharibu
- Sharibu, one of the 110 girls abducted in Dapchi is yet to be released by her abductors
- The group also condemned the government for releasing some Boko Haram members after 'deradicalisation'
The Congress of Northern Nigeria Christians (CNNC) in Kaduna on Monday, March 26, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to put more effort into securing the release of Leah Sharibu, one of the school girls abducted from Dapchi.
104 out of the 110 students of Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe state abducted by Boko Haram from the school on February 19 were released by the abductors on March 21 but Sharibu was not one of the girls brought back.
In a press conference at the Nigerian Union of Journalists' secretariat in Kaduna, the spokesman for the organisation, Larry Yammai, read the group's statement while a former Vice-Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University, Prof. Adamu Baiki, responded to questions raised by journalists, Punch reports.

Yammai said: “CNNC notes with great concern the abduction of yet another set of schoolgirls. While we rejoice that almost all the girls have been released, we are heavily saddened that our daughter, Miss Leah Sharibu, is being held because of her faith.
“The truth is very obvious that the destruction project of the Boko Haram sect is very much targeted at Christians. CNNC strongly condemns this evil tendency and urges Mr. President to, as a matter of urgency, intervene and ensure the immediate release of this young girl.
“It is ironical that the detained terrorists are being released in greater numbers in the name of de-radicalisation while their captives are still being held."

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has lamented what it said were feeble attempts made by the federal government to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, the Dapchi school girl who insisted on not renouncing her Christian faith and converting to Islam.
CAN said the development has affirmed fears in some quarters that Christians are endangered in the country.
