Since making its entrance in the African scene, one of the fastest growing digital television operator StarTimes has continued to flex its muscles, as it is currently challenging the monopoly of SuperSport in the pay television market.
The Chinese company has been making waves for a while now and saw an increase in sales of digital decoders and antennas when it won rights to the 2015 FIFA tournaments (Women’s World Cup and men’s U17 & U20) for sub-Saharan Africa.
However, the big breakthrough for StarTimes came after the company was awarded the rights to broadcast all Union of European Football Association (UEFA) champions league, including the famous Champions League final on June 3, 2017 between Real Madrid and Juventus.

A keenly contested first half in the Champions League final was simply pushed away by a one-sided second half, with Real Madrid coming out victorious after a resounding 4-1 win over Juventus.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace gave Real Madrid their 12th Champions League title in club history and a remarkable and historic third win in four years.
Banking on the success of the Champions League coverage, StarTimes further gained exclusive broadcast rights to Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue1, Chinese league and select Premier League games on its partner channel, NTA Sports 24 for its teeming subscribers.
The digital TV operator has its business mainly in Asia and Africa where it has already connected to more than 1,000,000 subscribers across its 10 African territories, making it the largest of the current group of digital TV operators.
Its large number of users prompted the company to appoint Super Eagles legend Nwankwo Kanu as its brand ambassador for Africa.
