- The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) explained how taking part in the electoral exercise would benefit the agitators
- INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu state, Emeka Ononamadu, said INEC's madate does not consider such agitations
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that it would go ahead with the planned elections in the south-east even if voters do not really come out to exercise their rights as expected.
Reacting to a call by Biafran agitators for the people of the south-east to boycott the election in Anambra and others until their grievances are met, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu state, Emeka Ononamadu, said that it had nothing to do with the organisation.
Daily Trust reports that Ononamadu, who spoke in Enugu, urged the agitators to stop asking people not to vote because that would not help the zone.

He told the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) to mobilise their supporters to partake in the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise.
He suggested that this could help them in the event that the country decides to conduct a referendum which they yearn for.
“Even if you want to do a referendum, you will still need voters’ registration, so telling people not to participate is like shooting yourself on the foot.

“Election has no ethnic/religious face. Even in churches and in selection of traditional rulers, elections are conducted. It has become part and parcel of society.
“Election is a central tool you can use to aggregate opinion about who rules,” he reportedly said.
NAIJ.com had earlier reported that the Biafran Reformation Movement (BRM) recently put a clog in the progress of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.
The BRM, on Monday July 24, while Kanu was relishing some support in Ebonyi state, said the IPOB leader was carrying out actions dangerous to the interest of the Igbo people.
While speaking with journalists in Enugu, the leader of the group, Mr Ndubuisi Igwekani, said Kanu’s call for the boycott of Anambra election was ill-mannered.
