South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC), elected Cyril Ramaphosa, the country's deputy president, as its new leader.
Ramaphosa replaced President Jacob Zuma as the head of the party by defeating Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma at the party's election on Sunday December 17 and Monday, December 18.
In the event that the ANC wins South Africa's general elections in 2019, Ramaphosa will become the country's president.

A total of 4,776 delegates began casting their ballots late on Sunday night and continued until mid-morning on Monday, December 18, to choose between the party's deputy president and former African Union chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
