Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has congratulated the declared winner of the Liberia presidential runoff election, George Weah.

Jonathan in a Facebook post on Thursday, December 28, said throughout his political life, he lived by the creed that nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of their citizens and commended both candidates, George Weah and Joseph Boakai, for the peace that characterised the election.
The former president urged the Liberia president-elect to continue as he has started, with an open arms policy.
He said everybody is a winner when democracy wins, adding that democracy had won in Liberia.

NAIJ.com had earlier reported that George Weah, a former international football star from Liberia has finally been declared winner of the electoral run-off in the country after beating his opponent, Joseph Boakai, the BBC has reported.

The former footballer will now succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, in Liberia's first democratic handover after civil war.
The report quoted the National Elections Commission (NEC) as saying on Thursday, December 28, Weah had won 61.5 percent of the vote while Boakai was far behind with 38.5 percent.
The report said major towns in the country erupted in jubilation as citizens danced upon hearing the result.
It added that Weah, 51, through the Coalition for Democratic Change, won the hearts of most of the youths as his rival was seen as old at 73.
Weah had won the first round of the election in October with 38.4 percent vote against the 28.8 percent won by Boakai leading to the run-off.
