Terry while speaking on Sky Sports said: "If you look at Liverpool he certainly goes into the starting line-up.
"Arsenal the same. Chelsea, he makes their squad better. Man City he goes into that starting XI. Same at Manchester United.
"I think he goes into all them squads and makes them better."
It was a shock that Van Dijk did not leave St Mary's in the summer, with a deal to Liverpool looking like it was all wrapped up.
Since then he has made his way back into Mauricio Pellegrino's team, playing eight times in the league so far this season.
Van Dijk was dropped for Southampton's 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Aston Villa ace Terry said: "If they [Southampton] are demanding £60million, if I were Chelsea I would be saying more like £55m if he’s not getting in their starting XI.
