Dele Samuel is a 43-year-old man from Oyo state who works and earns a living as a vulcaniser. The agile man spoke in an exclusive interview with NAIJ.com where he opened up on his struggles and challenges as an artisan.
The middle aged man spoke extensively on his life as a vulcaniser. Samuel’s stand is located at Ikotun area of Lagos. He has been there for many years with residents around testifying to his work and faithfulness.
The father of three revealed that going to school did not go well with him. Thus, he ventured into transport business in a bid to make a living and move on in life.
Dele Samuel said he is passionate about his job.

While speaking with NAIJ.com correspondent, Samuel narrated how he got to know a vulcaniser around a popular park where drivers assemble while resting.
“We usually sit under a tree when we are not working. That was when I discovered a vulcaniser who was active and hard working. The way he went about his business fascinated me; that was when I made up my mind. I decided to learn the trade.” He said.
After concluding in his mind, he approached the man and told him his plan. He learnt under him for two and a half years before he set up to be on his own.
Samuel went on to talk about the numerous challenges he has faced while practicing as a vulcaniser. According to him, the trade requires a lot of patience as it comes with a lot of demeaning remarks.
People often look down on the practitioners of this skill as they consider them dirty and undeserving of the good things of life. However, Samuel says looking beyond all that has helped him a great deal as he is passionate about it.
He had ditched transport business for vulcanizing and he has not regretted his decision till date. Even though the job makes him render services to others, he is at peace with it. He revealed that he has been able to acquire some properties through it.
Samuel’s children are currently in school as he claimed the skill has helped him keep both body and soul together. He is a proud owner of a Paragon bus which brings home money regularly.

Despite not being a graduate, Samuel says he is going to do all he can to make his children go to school. He laid emphasis on the importance of education without sidelining the acquisition of skills.
“Education is not all, you need to learn a trade.” He had said.
The hardworking man is glad he made the decision to learn the trade as it has paid off.
