The police in Anambra state on Tuesday, January 30, arrested two suspects who allegedly used kidnapped children for alms begging in Onitsha.
From the police report, the suspects, Friday Edet and Ezekiel Ubong, reportedly made N25,000 daily from the from begging. They were discovered to hail from Akwa Ibom state.

The suspects, who had since been detained at the Onitsha prisons, claimed to be members of a humanitarian group.
It was reported by The Punch that the said group are known for parading sick children and using them for alms begging. They were arrested by the Fegge division of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Fegge divisional police officer, Rabiu Garba, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects were notorious for using abducted children for alms begging in locations different from their states. Garba disclosed that the suspects bring the children out for begging after inflicting injuries and ailments on them to attract pity and sympathy from passersby.

Garba said six boys with hernia, as well as a three-year-old girl with cancer of the lips, who were abducted by the suspects, had been rescued and reunited with their families.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the Anambra state government had declared Thursday, February 1, as work free day for all civil servants in the state. The state government said the free day would enable all Anambra residents to honour the second republic vice president, late Alex Ekwueme.
The secretary to the state government, Solo Chukwudebelu, in a statement said the work free day would also enable the people participate effectively in the funeral rites and programmes planned for the late icon.
