LIRS (Lagos International Revenue Service) is the main agency in Lagos which is responsible for collecting taxes. An important institution like it should be headed by a real professional, and today we will try to take a closer look at the qualifications of the current LIRS Chairman and if he is well suited for his position.
Duties of LIRS Chairman
Before we go into our main topic, let us take a look at the main duties of LIRS Chairman. We do not have to mention that this guy hold the most power in the tax affairs of Lagos; however, he does not have the right to bring up new types of taxes or change the rates of the existing ones. His primary task lies in the organization of successful tax income.
The LIRS Chairman can create and execute programmes and implement strategies which will have a positive impact on revenue generation and collection. The Chairman is appointed by the Governor of Lagos State and can be moved from this position by his will. Current LIRS Chairman biography
Ayodele Hamzat Subair was born on May 21, 1960. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics obtained from the Metropolitan University of Manchester, United Kingdom. He also has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos.
The LIRS Chairman has an impressive work experience in private and public establishments. Before he went to private sector in 1987, he held a post at Price WaterHouse Chartered Accountants. He also had the position of Director of Lagos State Lotteries Board. In this case, he had to work with numerous foreign organizations such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Subair opened his own business after left his public post. His company is called “Hamzat Subair and Co. Chartered Accountants”. He is not the only owner, but he appears to be one of the managing partners. As you could have guessed, the company deals with accounting activities.
The current LIRS Chairman has a couple more merits:
- He is an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
- He is a honorable member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.
- He is a fellow of the Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Association of Nigeria.
In total, Ayodele Hamzat Subair has over 34 years of tough working experience in the economic sphere, so we cannot say he was a wrong candidate for the position he now holds. He became the Chairman of LIRS in October 2016 and has been doing a fantastic job since then.
He still has a lot of work to do; the reconstruction plans of Lagos state demand huge investments to achieve set goals and the main source of such funds are the taxes collected by the LIRS. This is a difficult task Subair has to face, but luckily for us, he has a lot of experience in solving difficult government problems.
