A bill which prescribes the death sentence for anyone who engages in kidnapping, has been approved by the upper legislative chamber, Premium Times reports.
The red chamber approved the bill on Thursday, September 28.

NAIJ.com notes that the law also outlaws abduction, wrongful restraint in order to obtain ransom, and also approves a 30-year jail sentence for anyone who collaborates with a kidnapper.
Clause 1 (3) of the bill states: “Whoever is guilty of the offence and then results in the death of the victim shall be liable on conviction to be sentenced to death.”
The bill was sponsored by Senator Isa Misau (APC-Bauchi), and was passed by a unanimous decision, following a voice vote.

Recall that NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigerian Senate resolved to enact a law prescribing the death penalty for kidnappers, in order to serve as a deterrent and curb kidnapping in the country.
The development followed the adoption of recommendations of the report of by the Joint Committee on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence on the 'unfortunate reoccurrence of kidnapping and hostage taking'.
