Ibrahim Idris, Nigeria's inspector general of police has backed death penalty for convicted kidnappers while urging officers not to get kidnapped.
The police boss said death penalty would reduce the menace of kidnapping in the country.

Idris made this known in Abuja on Wednesday, October 18, during the monthly conference with Commissioners of Police (CPs) and other senior police officers held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel.
In the meeting, he endorsed the bill passed by the National Assembly that included death sentence as punishment for convicted kidnapping suspects, Daily Trust reports.
He also said a team would be constituted by the CP in charge of legal department to strategize toward successful prosecution of about three thousand kidnapping suspects in police custody.
The IGP expressed his concern over the recent kidnapping of police officers especially the kidnap of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Niger State.
Going further, Idris warned all CPs to ensure that their officers are conscious of their movements, so as to avoid the embarrassment of being kidnapped.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that kidnappers suspected to be Niger Delta militants have kidnapped four missionaries in Delta state.

Andrew Aniamaka who is the state commissioner of police confirmed the kidnapping of the missionaries who were said to offer free medical service to the people in the region.
He said: "The abductors have not made any contact but we are doing our investigations to know the motive and have them rescued without jeopardising their lives.
