The end of the 2016/2017 season saw the exit of two icons captains from their clubs Francesco Totti at AS Roma and John Terry at Chelsea.
Both players were icons and will forever be remembered as some of the best the game has ever seen.
With that in mind NAIJ.com relays Football Whisper's list of other captains in football who have been just as iconic and influential on and off the pitch for their teams;

John Terry
Was made captain in 2004 until he left for Aston Villa in 2017. In December 2011 he captained the west Londoners for a record 400th game.
He lifted the the 2012 Champions League, Europa League, five Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Community Shield.

Bobby Moore
Lifted the World Cup as England skipper. The West Ham legend Moore has been hailed as one of the best defenders ever. He lifted the 1964 FA Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup a year later.

Bryan Robson
His nickname said it all; Captain Marvel. He won the European Cup Winners’ Cup, Premier League (2) and FA Cup (3) during a glittering 13-year career at Manchester United.

Francesco Totti
Totti achieved what every football fan aims for growing up by becoming a legend at his hometown club, Roma.
He spent 25 years at the Stadio Olimpico scoring 250 Serie A goals, winning the Scudetto in 2001 as well as two Coppa Italias.

Roy Keane
Another marvelous captain at Manchester United for 12 years where he won 17 trophies, Keane was the leader of many of Sir Alex Ferguson’s greatest sides at Old Trafford after arriving from Nottingham Forest.

Paolo Maldini
Probably the greatest defender ever. The AC Milan and Italy legend has the most appearances in Serie A (647) and most outings for Milan (902) after spending his entire career at the San Siro.

Tony Adams
One of the greatest captains in Premier League history. Made his name at Arsenal were he was captain of a great defense.

Patrick Vieira
The former French international Vieira was captain of Arsenal’s Invincibles.

Javier Zanetti
He played for 19 years and only retired in 2014 after spending 13 of those years at Inter Milan.

Who can ever forget captain fantastic's greatest moment; the 2005 Champions League win for Liverpool.
He scored 186 times in 710 appearances for Liverpool where he always played with mediorce players. He however has nine winners’ medals to his name.
