The pairing of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have failed to yield the kind of result Mourinho needs as the duo have struggled of late and are out of contract in 2019.
United will have to compete with other top clubs to sign the former Atletico Madrid defender.
Mourinho has a big match against Chelsea at Old Trafford and will be hoping Eric Bailly's return into the center-back position will pay dividends.
